VE Day

VE Day

Friday 8th May 2020 marks 75 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.

We can no longer meet in person so we’ve pulled together a few pointers to help you celebrate the event on Friday and into the weekend. Whether you are part of Scouting in Farnsfield or not there’s something for everyone to have a go at.

If you can’t attend the groups VE Camp at Home then we’ve got everything from Garden Party to music, party games to activities and even make your own bunting. Take a look through the information we’ve pulled together for you to enjoy and celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe.

Please ensure you follow government advice on staying at home during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

Farnsfield VE Garden Party

On Friday 8th May join Farnsfield’s VE 75th Anniversary Celebrations Garden Party from your very own house! Organised by local people this is a street party from the comfort of your garden from 2pm onwards. Join the Facebook group, here, to get latest information.

1940's Playlist

A party isn’t complete without a playlist. The 1940’s was known for big band and jazz – as well as new wave electric guitar. Use the Spotify playlist below to inspire your VE Day sounds. Please be considerate of your neighbours when playing any music outside.

The Nations Toast

The Nations Toast to Our Heroes & Minutes Silence. At 11am on Friday 8th May grab a drink and join the nation in two minutes’ silence followed immediately afterwards by a national toast to all the heroes of the war.

Victory Party Food

Have a go at some recipes from 1940’s provided from gov.uk.

Meals

  • Cauliflower cheese with bacon – make the most of the rationed cheese with this British classic
  • Spam hash – A can of spam can last 5 meals so this party dish will certainly serve everyone!
  • Homity Pie – a rich, wholemeal pie with a potato, onion and cheese filling said to be made by Land Girls during WW2.
  • Vegetable turnovers – a bit like the Homity Pie only in pasty form!

Desserts

  • Eggless fruit cake – eggs were rationed but don’t worry, there was still delicious cake to have!
  • Pear crumble – A guaranteed hit with everyone at the party!

VE Activities & Classic Games

While we normally love the great outdoors, we’ve pulled together some inspired VE garden party activity ideas to keep you entertained during your VE Celebration. Have a go at one of #TheGreatIndoors activities below or some classic games from 1940’s. If you want something a little more creative have a go at creating your own bunting.

Get involved and celebrate VE Day by getting creative with these activities. Courtesy of Mansfield District Council these activities were provided by Mansfield Museum.
